Travel Journal |
The travel
journal style has the interactive nature that I want to include in the book.
This is done through the idea of ‘scrap-booking’ which allows the user to
attach their findings. This is an element I want to include in my book as especially
with travel it gives the audience to add some of their own content and make the
book about their findings and own personal journey rather than Hannah’s alone. This
is something I want to further investigate, the addition of unplanned content
without disturbing the atheistic style of the book itself.
How could I
add this?
- Tape images in
- Leave gaps
- Create the book by handmade processes
- Give clips to add images
- Leave some content editable to make it interactive
This would
work well as it goes with the content of the book, and makes the audience more
of a participating party rather than just a consumer. It would also allow the
audience to have one place to keep all of the things they pick up on the way of
their travels.
Although this
would add these needed elements, I would need to find a way to make the content
that is being inserted put in, in a certain way to still allow some of the
content of the book to show through.
Traditional Guide Book:

The more
traditional guide book would be the safe route to go down in terms of both
design, and a way of safely knowing how to gain a specific consumers interest;
as obviously by purchasing the book they would be in the market for something
that style to begin with. Although there is elements of a traditional guide
book I do want to keep in mind with my design ideas, such as their informative
nature, but in my book I want to make the information more subjective and
interpretative; allowing the user to create their journey rather than the
creator of the publication.
Citix60
guides are useful to use as reference for a guide that specifically aims itself
towards culturally inspired design conscious people, precisely my demographic. The
6 guides are created by 60 local creatives to the city in which they are based
giving the audience the non-typically tourist profit based guidance. This idea
of taking away some of the more instructional elements within the content is an
avenue I am taking with my design, allowing the focus to be on the emotional
and cultural impact of the place. This is evident in the vibrant, colourful, hectic
style of the visuals within the book; as it is being aimed towards creatively
focused people who are visiting these places to enrich their creative culture. Which
gives me the visual inspiration to base the look of my book to be more focused
around minimalism and editorial design. In order to create a more simplistic
visual literacy re-engaging the whole idea of focusing the book around the
emotional and cultural links.
This is
important to include in the design because the audience are already going to a
new place and experiencing new things. Therefore, in the design there needs to
be some considerations to make the design seem familiar and comfortable for the
content to be able to properly resonate with the audience.
