To start off my research into my initial ideas I looked at
the idea of old postcards, particularly finding images which old postcards are
being held up to a modern scene to create a comparison, this gave me ideas on
the way in which I can present my idea. As the cards are potable they can be
held up and aligned. The contrast between old and new is shown in the content
of the image, alongside the use of black and white and grain. This could be
added into the book as part of the pop out/pull out. Although this also gives
me an idea that the wayfinding system may not even need to be a book and could
be based entirely upon visuals. Although to be able to make this possible
direction would be needed to be added through some sort of pictogram or arrow,
though due to my audience this would need to be something simplistic; as a
pictogram alone would not tell someone who is new to the city where the
location is. I also began to make notes on the similarities and differences
between using an old photo in a real scene and the way it would look. This
research has told me that I need to re-evaluate my original design ideas to get
a guidebook, as from what can be seen from this research the images need to be
portable unable to hold up to the scene. This can be done in either a Polaroid
style, or in a postcard style; in which the set could be sold all together.
