This was the first crit in which my idea was solid and I was
gaining feedback on what should be changed and my anticipated design ideas, to
see what would be successful and what would not for my booklet idea.
My booklet is to no longer have a text on it, other than the
short introduction describing what the wayfinding system will be, the rest of
the book will identify each of the location by image. The image will be sourced
from the Leodis Collections, which is an archive consisting of over 170,000
images of Leeds which have been publicly sourced, a pictogram will be used as
directions in between each of the locations, this would be consistent and from
one type letter form. Keeping this consistent alongside with the colour will
add a sense of direction as found in my previous research, when red and the X
release alongside each other as a wayfinding system for an exhibition. The
image itself will line-up against the to give an idea of what it used to look
like in comparison to looks like now. By taking out the information factor I
can fix on the visuals and aesthetic of the book, they also believe I taken up
this information gives a personal link to the imagery as the information is
entirely visual and makes the audience want to work the next one to find the
next comparison.
From the crit feedback I have found out that I should be
using Asterix as my pictogram, I've chosen to use in Asterix there is five
locations on my map, similar the five arms of the Asterix, this led to the idea
that each image the viewpoint could actually be inside of the old image through
the overlay of Asterix. Each time you get to a new image and new arm of the
Asterix would be cut out, therefore realising a comparison between the old and
new not only around the image but through the image. I also found out that the
experimentation of the pictogram I should be considering colour, taking into
consideration geographical and graphic design rulings for the location in which
the design is taking place. These colours could also have a historical link to
Leeds, such as the elderly found in the coat of arms. The pictogram used for
the directions and the location finding would be simplistic, I should also create
some pictograms which depicted buildings of the locations, which could also
line up to the buildings through the use of lining colour. For example, adding
a section to the building, through the use of final, as red and on these
pictograms also shading that section red.
