Moral principles that govern a person’s behaviour
What is it to be good?
‘Within philosophy, ethics is the branch of knowledge concerned with
moral principles. This is not primarily in order to develop strategies by
which to judge one another. It is about the pursuit of truth – questioning
whether there is such a thing as the property of ‘goodness’ and testing
the resultant ideas against various models.’

Ethics is subjective
‘Electronic communication has now almost destroyed distance and time,
so that we have little excuse for not being aware of the world’s ills.
Practically every decision we make as designers has an ethical
dimension, requiring us all to “balance the forces” in our own small way
as responsible individuals.’

In groups discuss:
Do you think ethics is important in graphic design and why?
Graphic designers have an influence on the audience through the work which they produce, if one was to design for a political party which opposes their personal stance; it could be seen as betraying the fundamentals of being a designer itself, through endorsing and promoting beliefs they separate themselves from within their personal life.
What defines “good” in graphic design?
Steven Heller quote
What does ethical practice entail in graphic design – what principles?
Ethical practice within graphic design is a broad and undefined spectrum which changes for each person depending on their beliefs and the way in which they work, should a designer be designing under a personal ethical stance or designing through ethics that their client are requesting; raising the question of ethics being a personal or professional factor to ones practice.
‘When it comes to graphic design, isn’t it better not to walk away from jobs on
ethical grounds, but to ask if there’s some way that you can have influence,
something you can bring? Otherwise, I would have said that the law is racist
and sexist, and not had anything to do with it. Your job and mine are about
influence and persuasion. A judge may well have certain views at the beginning
of the case and different ones by the end. Most certainly those views are not
going to be challenged if I’m not there.’ - Jacqueline Roach

Link between the aesthetic and ethical … A.C. Grayling
Aesthetic is important to create work that looks the way you want to look, by doing that you’re putting that into the world, for others to enjoy; but is it ethically viable.
