Studio Brief 2: Initial Visual Ideas

Idea 1:
Google Home Ad Parody
My first idea is a quick render of an idea based on surveillance and the extent that surveillance could be getting to. Since the very broad and open leak of NSA files by Edward Snowden in 2013, and other similar events such as the head of the CIA and Mark Zuckerberg covering their webcams with stickers; the public have seen monitoring and surveillance as an issue. It was revealed that microphones and webcams could be accessed by people without the user’s knowledge. How far has this extent of surveillance gone within the wider community and how far will it go? With new home assist devices such as Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Apple HomePod, how could they be used in similar ways? Is this a good thing for security or is this an invasion of people’s basic privacy? These are a question I could visually explore further if I were to choose this as my starting point to further develop.

This visual exploration is an example of one of these questions taking the identity of the advert from Google and putting it into parody, making the usual audience of this type of media developments question it true meaning and look further into the type of products they're letting into their homes. It is evident that this is a concern in modern day due to how much information is becoming evident in the media regarding it, such as ‘Black Mirror’ a series based solely about the misuse of technological advances.

Idea 2:
Some people are gay get over it, Stonewall Parody

The visual reference behind this initial development comes from a parody of the stonewall advertising which was placed to create awareness and promote a decline in homophobia. The statement is true and taken from a YouGov survey, I have put it in this format to create shock, it is pulling up the audience and highlighting a group of people negatively for their incorrect opinion.

This exploration takes into consideration the current identity of stonewall and makes it a parody. Making the contact impactful and different to what would normally be expected from the charity. The shock created in the intensity of the language used in this visual is aimed at the idea of questioning the 'morality' of the charity, but this shock and unexpected nature allow for serious consideration of the piece by the audience.

Idea 3:
asos
This idea was based on the idea of more gender representation in the beauty market and the way in which it is being translated into the world of shopping online. As can be seen on the ASOS website, where makeup and skin-care has been added to the men's section; although this has not been advertised widely; yet the addition to the department online reflects a need in the market. This has been a slow transisiton and is not represented within the rest of the market.

This investigation could have an insight on toxic masculinity and the way in which men are perceieved within not only the beauty and cosmetic market, but on masculinity as a whole. This is an issue I can identify with and also something which there is a lot of content that is around currently so an issue I can invesitgate deeply into.
