In his own tv series turner award prize-winning artist, Grayson Perry, investigates the ideas and ideals of modern masculinity. Perry himself explores drag, alongside being a keen mountain biker and also a father of one, giving him his own unique experience of the way in which he see's his gender and the so-called 'boundaries', which some men feel they must abide by.
As this deals with the issue I am investigating in such a direct manner I watched each episode and took notes about its content and findings. As it allowed me to get an insight into some of the stereotypes that are related
Episode 1 - Hard Man
In the first episode, Perry spends time with a group of cage fighters, this was explored as Grayson believes that the desire to 'be tough' is holding men back. Although his investigations allow him to see the vulnerabilities that lie behind the people he meets public identities; which they see as a reason to have to fulfil the idea of being 'tough' elsewhere.
My notes:
In episode 2 Grayson spends time with two groups of young men in two different rival parts of Lancashire. The two groups are concerned with rank and territory, the episode explores the ideas that are running through their minds with their turf war; as well as investigating the opinions of the residents in the community. More than 80% of the crime and anti-social behaviour in the UK is caused by males, but the issue is rarely addressed in gender terms, exploring the ideas that these men are trying to portray and must do so through crime.
