In this TED talk it is spoken about the ways in which the
ideas and ideals of masculinity are changing, it discussed ‘ego’ as a dog that
is pulling at the lead of the person who is walking it. Which puts in visual
contextual content the way in which ideals of masculinity have been treating
young men for centuries. Ether the person is guided by their soul or driven by
their ego, and what is it that is creating this perception of the masculine
ideals, the answer is traditional values, so surely masculinity views are not still
valid; and to correlate with such there needs to be a change. A visual metaphor
is used for this, when you’re looking at a map if that map is outdated you won’t
be able to use it for its purpose, so ‘does the map, fit the territory?’ if the
answer to that question is no surely it must be updated. In the instance of
masculinity this could be done not only in changing the emotive language used
around masculinity but also through a physical balance between marketing and
production of products within the genders. How could there expected to be a
level of equilibrium between the genders when there are so many examples of
subliminal messages teaching people to be only particularly feminine or
particularly masculine and making that the closed box that is only available.
