Foundation - will need a pump based bottle.
Concealer - will need either a tube or dipper tube which can hold liquid and a box
Bronzer - will need a large pot, which will contain the powder.
Highlighter - will also need a pot, which will contain the powder itself.
To be able to design for such products I will initially need to create a net-design for each, these rough designs can then be translated into labels.
Considerations:
I have decided to develop designs based on colour as my previous research and experiments have suggested the best way to do so would be through the use of bright pops of colour that are gender neutral. The design must also be clean-cut and modern, to infit with the modern nature of the product. I will be further developing my previous idea from the last crit which featured a block colour against white, as this was most relevant to the brand identity and most well received in the crit; which highlighted how the visual identity successfully linked the ideas of the brand.
I have also made the decision to only include the colour on the bottle on the part that has the pop, therefore, any writing will be clear and selective varnished to make it stand out. This decision was made to ensure that the brand is not considered as either male or female, in keeping with the design of the logo itself. In order to add further attention to such writing, it will be debossed on any products actual material itself. Giving the effect of almost eliminating the idea of the brand at all, because of its clear nature and subtle depth, further keeping the focus on the product itself and thus Taking away the idea of gender branding altogether.
I will also be considering the factors that people said they would want to have a make-up brand which was gathered via my primary research.
Foundation bottle net:
The net for this bottle take the colour halfway around, leaving the other half white. The lettering which here can be seen as grey would be selective varnished in order to make it stand out, meaning the colour would not change and simply be whatever is underneath, as can be seen above the word balance would be white and the word shade would be Green.
Green is one of the colours identified as being gender neutral within my research, this particular type of green is extremely bright, therefore creating a clean and eye-catching design. The fact that the colour should be clean and bright was highlighted in my previous critiques from peers. The fact that the colour is bright as representative of the make-up that is being used, this was something that was highlighted within the original survey which I completed.
The shade itself is shown within the droplet, this shade is specific to the user and is established through image sampling which can be found on the website questionnaire.
In order to create this, I created a basic outline of a droplet in illustrator which can then be used across the range, the colour is changed to the closest of that of the users' skin tone.
The text on the bottle itself will be simplistic, and in fit with the branding; as can be seen above the same typeface has been used (unidazzle) as the logotype. This particular label of the bottle does not feature the small logo, this is because it is used elsewhere within the design. I have made this decision after considering the physical bottle itself and the placement in which to make it look like a professionally polished outcome.
Bronzer box:
The net design for the bronzer box uses an intense shade of orange, this is because of the connotations are natural pigments of the bronzer itself. Each of the colour selections that have been made a representative of that type of product, therefore anything that darkens on the face shows warmer tones anything that lightens the faith shows cooler tones, thus the reason that green was selected for the foundation and concealer packaging as these are neutral colours. The design itself is similar to the previous in the way that it uses the same typeface in the same sites to keep consistency throughout the brand. The items are shown in grey, yet again will be printed in a spot varnish with a debossed effect onto the packaging, yet the shade below will simply be printed onto the bottle. The shade used is on average between the shades that that particular set of make-up is set for, this visual link will give a better understanding to first-time users about the way which colours complement each other in the way in which shades must be used against and for each other's complimentary styles.
Highlighter box:
the net design for the highlight uses a similar design style to the previous, the colour blue has been selected as this is something to buy in the face and therefore is a cooler tone yet again; allowing the consumer to understand the way in which make-up is applied. Yet again the grey sections will be debossed and spot varnished so will not be obviously eye. it was important with this product to make it evident that the highlighter did not include shimmer, this is the make it more open to a wider market as males don't tend to want shimmer, in order to be more discreet with their make up. Once again this shaders included with the colour being the same colour as the powder inside.
Concealer packaging:
This once again features the same style logo as the others, yet as this is a box for the concealer, the logo will not be debossed it will simply be spot varnished onto the paper which will make the box. The colour used within this piece is matched to the colour that will be seen on the bottle, as previously spoken about this bright green is used across all of the products are liquid that should go on the face, this allows for consistency through the products, allowing the consumer if they have never use makeup before to identify what products should be put where and with what other products.
Concealer bottle:
This design features the same green as the other products this will be printed onto the concealer bottle itself. The same design has been taken from the foundation bottle, the line at which the white and the colour meet, coincide with the opposite lines in which the green and white meet on the foundation bottle. This means when the products are placed together they look similar, further visually reinforcing the colour choices that have been made. The bottle that this will be made out of will be plastic and squeezy therefore once again the logo cannot be debossed and will simply be spot varnished contrast against the semi satin texture of the plastic itself.
Cleanser and moisturiser:
as one of the most popular reasons why males would start using a make-up brand was if it had other skin benefits in mind, I decided that to include a cleanser/moisturising solution would be the best way to represent less than the brand. The colour red has been used to identify how important this step is as make-up can be bad for the user if left on the skin for an extensive amount of time. The box itself is larger than the others but takes into consideration the amount of use it will have. To clarify the different tones are needed or different types are needed "all skin types" has been added. This coincides with the rest of the brand and shows how the brand could be extended to other skin care products not only make-up and cosmetic solutions.
Disposable brushes:
In order to make the make-up even more accessible to all of the market, I've decided to introduce a pack which includes some small brushes and pads; which are to be used with different types of the makeup. The brushes themselves would be coloured accordingly to the product that should be used alongside it. The pack itself is purple as purple as a neutral colour which complements the rest of the range. I have added an illustration of the bin to clarify that these are both disposable and biodegradable, through adding this product to the range it is truly inviting people who have never used the product to try it for the first time; Thus setting a large target of my market.
Production:
In order to produce the products in the correct manner, I would need access to industry standard equipment to be able to deep bass into the different types of plastics that would be used. I would also need specialist industry printers to be able to replicate the selective varnish onto the plastic material itself. Through doing so I would not be able to produce these as physical items unless the brief was taken to an industry level. Therefore in order to create the best representation of the brief itself, I will be using a mockup design which best represents the products in situ. Through doing this I will be able to give an accurate representation of the professional level that this would be produced if taken to an actual client. Other items and sections of the brief will be produced through printed physical outcomes, giving the client and all-around idea of the way in which it could be produced, I will be doing this by adapting my designs to be able to use the facilities that are available. Unfortunately, I will not be able to do that with these net designs as I believe that it would take away from the design itself not represented in its true light.
