Whilst researching the current selection of ‘To Kill a
Mockingbird’ covers I also took evidence of what would be surrounding the book
on the shelf. From this I can see the main colours used within the spine is
black and red. Black began as the original choice for book spine covers, when
considering traditional binding cover methods such as leather and fabric, this
is a traditional that has been carried out. Red is a colour which grabs the
audience’s attention, although due to this rule of colour theory, the shelves
have become oversaturated with red hues; reversing the reason why they were
made red in the first place. This research was imperative to discover what
colours to use to make the books stand out against the others, to bring in high
audience interaction. This is a key factor I will need to consider when
designing my pieces.
