My initial ideas are based around considerations of
both the brief and the obviously and background stories and key themes evident
throughout the storyline. This will be effecting how I will be creating my work
throughout.
Initial ideas:
- Pick up on the idea of using a key quote to create an abstract visualisation.
- Bluejay shot down.
- Colour experiments to represent segregation.
- Walking in someone else’s skin.
- Court case depiction.
- Boo Radley focus on his part as the ‘mockingbird’
- The innocence of Tom Robinson
- Depiction of a key scene, the ruining of the garden
- A card playing on colour and the “guilty/non guilty” sides of the racisim within the book.
Initial Sketches |
My initial sketches are some ideas that I have
noted down as I was thinking about them, the first sketch here depicts a bullet
hole, the idea would be that the hole and the marks around it would be coloured
in different types of blue. This is representing the killing of a bluejay,
linking back to one of the key quotes.
The second is depicting a simple typography layout which
utilise blue, each of these designs have visual links to this quote, which is
an infamous part of the book.
Initial Ideas Sketches |
My third sketch refers more to Tom Robinson and the
court case and its part within the storyline, being preeminent to the book. The
sketch shows an x-ray of a broken left hand, this is referring to the strong
evidence suggesting the innocence of Tom Robinson, although this is only recognisable
to the audience after having a prior knowledge of the storyline.
The fourth idea is focusing around the racist
segregation in the book, whilst also picking up on a key quote of walking
around in his skin. It depicts two tons of skin with a zip down the middle,
representing the difference and segregation between the races; while the zip is
capturing the ability to almost step into another situation.
Initial Ideas Sketch |
My 5th idea shows a hand crushing a
flower which the head has fallen off, relating to the scene of destruction of
Mrs Dubose’s garden. This is key part to the children’s moral development, thus
affecting their future judgment, and perception of the goings on in the small
town, making it key to the storyline; yet not evident to the audience upon
first impression. The 6th idea represents an idea which captures the
verdict of the people due to the colour of a man’s skin, the guilty will be in
white surrounded by black, depicting the white peoples instantly judgement. Below
will be a white space in which I will be writing in my left hand not guilty, representing
the voice of Tom Robinson, clear by the shaky writing and his lack of use of
his left hand, which consistently proves to the audience his innocence.
