The exhibition that I have chosen to represent in
my poster is Henri Matisse: The cut outs, from the TATE Modern from 2014. He is
a popular artist within the modern art community and I wanted to be able to
have a relation to the paper cut out content that I created. I chose to create
a poster for TATE as it is representative of modern art, which I think my paper
construction is also representative of because of its simplicity and abstract
nature; that is created out of the shapes. Henri Matisse’s collection is
created out of paper cut outs that are placed into various positions to depict
his abstract interpretation of a subject. Therefore, due to the format I though
it made more sense to create a poster for this exhibition as it relates to the
medium I have used to create the imagery. I also chose a modern art exhibition to
create a design for as I am interested in modernist graphic design and
therefore the two would make sense when placed together. Within the poster I will
be experimenting with grids.

My information for the poster will be taken from
the Tate website itself, as this is where the exhibition was and puts the exhibition
into the best wording to describe it accurately. I will be taking into
consideration the modern style of Tate’s branding when designing the poster as
well as the work itself.
Tate: Henri Matisse
When researching into the past exhibition posters of the Tate
modern there are some key themes which cropped up, giving them a visual identity;
this is something I will be considering in the creation of my poster.
White space is frequently used; this is to add a modern feel
that pulls the information to the forefront of the audience’s attention. White space
is something I want to use in my designs, I think this creates a modern feel to
the design; in keeping with the aesthetic of the gallery and the art it
contains.
The name of the artist is also the largest thing on the
page, after an example of their work, this informs to audience the context of
the poster straight away, drawing attention and drumming up interest.
An example of the artist’s work is consistently given, I would
like to include this in my poster too, if the art work and colour interest
someone it will bring their interest into the content of the poster.
