Timeline |
Part of our study task was to create a timeline which captured key moments in Romek Marber’s life which could be inserted into a slip cover for a book, my timeline would be placed on the reverse of the cover/on the inside cover of the book.
The design is modernistic and simple to
contrast against the classic nature of the books. I have chosen to use green as
the main colour theme for my timeline, the green used is the same iconic green
used in Marber’s iconic penguin classic crime books as recognition to the most
recognisable work. This is further exemplified with the alternate colouration
of the images following Marber’s journey from key points in his life, including
place of study and small example of works with ‘The Economist’. I have placed
the text all slightly outside of the box for each point of the timeline, this
is to juxtapose the structured nature on the front of the books; giving a look
of breaking the grid. This disregard for structure and use of colour makes the
timeline stand out on the book, giving it a sense of importance; thus drawing
the attention of the audience to its content.
With this timeline I was also experimenting with
breaking the grid, in order to contrast against the strong structural cover. This
contrast gives the timeline an edge and difference compared to the other,
drawing the audience’s attention to it. To create this I used a modular grid,
this was broken through placing the content loosely on the page; this is
evident on the page through the difference between the placement of the actual
line and boxes themselves. This indifference of miss-use of the grid is further
clear to the audience by the displacement of the images, depicting elements of
Marber’s life.
