Shortlisted Entry 2016 |
This shortlisted entry at first glance appears as
unclear to what it links to, although this requires further investigation about
the content. The receipt acts as a synecdoche, it uses the receipt as a way to list
‘woman’ related attributes and activities, this is an intriguing method to
create a list. The title and main contents are highlighted using pink pen,
continuing on the theme of feminine colours used throughout the piece, drawing
in the correct target market. The imagery gives away some of what the book is
about, but on first impressions could be perceived as something different this
is something I want to explore and possibly include in my work. Creating an
interpretation that reveals only part of the contents.

This book consists of only typography, listing the
characters involved in the book. From this list the letters that make up the
title of the book are selected from the second name, relying on the use of
colour to highlight the audience’s attention. This is more of an obvious cover
than the previous as the cover itself really only contains the title, although
the list of names will cause intrigue for the audience, leading them to want to
read the book. This book being more obvious works, due to its lack of imagery,
it brings a conceptual idea towards a more commercial market.
Shortlisted Entry 2016 |
This was another cover shortlisted for ‘how to be a
woman’ on which a more typographic approach was selected. This was selected
because of its link to the story, pink highlighter is used within the book,
this visual link has been used directly on the cover and back cover of the
book. In comparison with how it was used on the previous design, as part of the
type colour itself. What is interesting about this design too is its almost
designed to look like an article, giving the audience an insight into how it is
written; without being direct, through changing the grid slightly but using a
relating typeface and colour scheme selection to a newsprint publication,
reaffirmed by the paper stock background.
