SB3 - Initial Ideas Feedback

The feedback from our presentation provided us with any thinking point and direction towards our branding. Although we saw the name in print would be successful, it was deemed unusable by the staff and students, as they did not believe that the concept behind it was strong enough. To combat this, we have chosen to proceed on with our ideas under the name pressing matters, focusing the idea around the use of press within traditional printing methods.

Here are some initial sketched based around creating a logo for pressing matters, the logos which proved most popular were the ones within the circle, this is because it gives the logo an all rounded appeal, I also experimented with creating some initial idea logos to see if it would inspire us any particular direction to head towards. Although I believe we need to create more of a base for our concept before creating the logo.

After presentation we had a crit with the tutor, in which we discussed the direction we should be taking branding. Which into the decision that the branding focus would be based around newspapers, due to the name, it may people think not only of traditional print (which the exhibition is based around and the idea) but also of news. The idea we discussed to take traditional print is a pressing matter and it is important as is our work, and news/current affairs. The branding would always take political identity direction, which is relevant to the prints that would be evident within the exhibition, they are the events which shaped Leeds.

In the crits today the process of research, idea generation and initial designs for the exhibition identity were presented to the other groups. Colours, typeface and identity were talked about as part of the inspirations in order to give the viewers an understanding of how we would be tackling the identity. Name generation was an important part of the presentation and the group seemed to react positively to the names produced. The way that conversation began about the name was a good sign as it gives clues to how the public would start beginning to talk about the exhibition.
The following feedback was given by the viewers:
Like how the name could be adapted to a gif
      Likes the name
      I am print
Imprint printers in KallKwik (similar to Staples, pronto print) - negative connotations in Leeds/
      https://www.kallkwik.co.uk/leeds/      sponsorship
      Inprint may work better
Pulp- liked, sounds like a juice company
Pressing Matters- liked- favoured the most
Unity. Can you apply the same things- vowel removal in pressing matters
      Could be a logotype
      Blind embossing
      Debossing
Some didn't like any of the names
I am print would work better
      Ay Up is alienating
Squeegee is funny, difficult to brand though, difficult for some to pronounce, general public don’t really understand the term
Two hashtags- one for print, one for social matters
Impression is liked, making a mark on leeds- apply edginess!!
Impressionists might link to impression too much
Other things to consider would be how the pieces within the exhibition will be arranged and how the spacial design works with this. What is the key visual language and how will this be applied? Make sure to make collateral consistent despite others working on different things.
Overall the presentation went well, proving successful in seeing how the identity will be received by the public. Lots of feedback has been given which the group will now be able to develop on from.
Stamps on digital work, lino cutting - back to traditional methods like screen printing, mono printing, letterpress etc
Tag line ties everything together
Have a strong name rather than focusing on the logotype
