We are to create a series of three book covers for
Penguin classics book cover of our choice. My theme that I have chosen to
create covers for is iconic classics that have gone onto become iconic movies.
The three titles I have chosen to develop are:
The Great Gatsby
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
A streetcar named desire
After researching into current penguin book covers I
discovered recently they have been very obvious in terms of using a scene that
could easily be one from a motion picture production of that book, depicting
what the audience should be imagining in their head. In comparison to the older
style of penguin crime series in which Marber created a grid for, and illustrated,
a series of abstract interpretations that don’t particularly capture any point
in the book, merely an object or scene linked to the storyline. The design plan
was to give 2/3’rds of the covers space to the illustration, letting the
artwork speak for the book and capture the audience’s attention. The design is
appropriate for the media as it allows for a short depiction to the audience,
whilst still giving all of the appropriate information, the cover allows 1/3rd
to the title; making the book a lot more visual based whilst still retaining
traditional values. In my design I decided to use the grid, rather than break
it, as I believe its structure has a good ratio between becoming visual but
still understandable, allowing the visuals to become more conceptual.
I will be conforming to a more traditional side of penguin designs to retain their roots will come through in my design through the use of the Marber grid. I would also like to take into consideration their newly found design style. The way I have chosen my theme for my three book covers allows me to mix these style, I will be doing this by taking elements from both design styles. I will be taking iconic scenes from the film developments of these books and illustrating them in a loose style, taking the more interpretative style of the original crime series book covers.
