AC - @printsbyjuunar

Prints by Juunar, is another artist which the print designer finds inspirational. Joonas Ursin is a surface print designer who creates his work electronically using his iPhone and other iOS devices, which are then exported electronically and presented on his Instagram. Therefore obtaining a completely different audience to Marimekko, therefore I decided to look into the branding and visual language that this particular artist has associated with himself in order to gain the correct audience.

In contrast to most of the designers within the same industry, Joonas uses imagery for his logo mark rather than a type based logo, although this offers a point of difference for some designers and compliments the mark making technique of his work itself, it does leave him a little lost within a highly saturated industry. Larger brands can be substantially represented through a simple visualisation due to their widespread notoriety, whereas I believe that smaller designers who are trying to gain this notoriety do better having a type based logo, for the sole reason of having a representation of the brand name itself, allowing for the brand name to stick in the mind of the audience, and therefore become more memorable; before moving into a more visually based logotype. As can be seen, by the following of this artist (as seen in figure 1) he may gain more of a following if his branding was more focused around himself as a professional.

It is interesting to see the similarities between the work of this artist and the designer which I am branding as I can see there are visual similarities in their process through their outcomes, both encapsulate bright and bold prints on a large scale. This shows me there is a mix between the commercial style of Marimekko and artistic style of this artist is a medium in which Abi Curtis wants to sit in a professional capacity.
