At this point in the project thought it was key to note
down any information that I thought I found that was shocking or brand-new
information, don't be detrimental in figuring out the visual outcome that would
combat against this issue. Therefore, I decided to go back on the research I'd
already done make notes on the key points, this would also give an idea on
where to move forward with my research for this brief.
Key Notes:
- The issue is something has been going on for a long time and something that has not been physically addressed in a few years. For example, this can be found in the no-go Britain campaign, something which brought a lot of attention to the difficulties of invisible illnesses as well as physical impairments.
- I notice there is a widespread kind of discrimination against people with invisible illnesses, as they are not understood to be able to use facilities are in place, they should be able to due to the fact that their illness is not a physical factor to their appearance.
- I noticed that a lot of people use verbal slurs to be able to make their thoughts about people who have medical illnesses widely heard not only to the person who dares to direct these verbal slurs at but also the people around them, in order to cause them embarrassment using facilities they believe they should be able to use.
- Changes that happen this year but not many people are notified about the way that invisible illnesses are now included within disabilities.
- There is not a lot of support out there for young people with disabilities to help have a greater understanding of what they're actually eligible for and what they're actually able to use as a disabled person.
- Britain recognises the problem and pledged to create a campaign called no-go Britain which highlighted the issues which disabled people face when it comes to transport, although this seems to have been forgotten since the series ended.
Key Facts:
- one in five people have a disability
- between a quarter of men and a third of women who identified as disabled have avoided situations because of their disability.
- Within an investigation over 6000 respondents had issues with travelling who also had issues with their mental health.
- It is only 20 years since it became illegal to discriminate against disabled people.
Summary
In summary, so far I believe I need to continue one
researching, into the issue. Although it is clearly identified that the focus
should mainly be on the public transportation methods in which issues of
invisible illness lie in, this is due to the large number of misconception
stories that are associated with the issue itself. Therefore, I believe the
graphic design solution could combat against these issues in some way, the way
in which it can be done will become clearer as the research continues due to the
nature of the brief. It is clear that public transportation is the main issue
when it comes to invisible illnesses due to the past campaigns that have been
involved such as the no-go Britain campaign, which is not really been touched
on the sense, leaving an open market for the re-discussion to be opened. It is
also an issue that people I've initially contacted to do interviews with have
highlighted. As well as something that can be seen across social media, another
platform I will be looking into as part of my investigation.
