For my research brief, I decided to look into invisible
illness, this is something close to my heart as I have a long-standing illness
myself which is not something people would know initially from just looking at
me. This is also an issue I believe is of major importance, which a lot of
young people, as well as older people, can relate to, I believe there is a massive misconception that long-term illness is something that is age-related
and therefore don't you have a conversation when it comes to younger people and
their voice in the wider sphere of knowledge around the invisible illness.
The initial idea of producing a visual outcome that could
combat/improve the knowledge of invisible illness in the day-to-day issues that
comes along with it came from an ITV story on the evening news. Whilst watching
the news the story was presented about a mother who parked at Meadowhall the shopping centre, in his disabled spot due to her daughter's illness, although no
physical equipment was needed to be taken from the car at that point medical
equipment that would be needed in case of an illness time of her daughter
happened would need to be close by. After going shopping and coming back to the
car the parent was greeted with a note from somebody else who would watch them park
earlier that day, the note said that her daughter did not look disabled enough
to be able to parking space nor did she, and therefore this number plate of the car has been taken as well as the car itself been reported to be relevant to the authority of the car park. This was despite the clear view of the blue badge
which was presented in the car itself.
This is a prime example of one of the issues that people
with invisible illnesses occur every day, without people having the
understanding of what is going on behind closed doors they have a pre-judgement
of people who have invisible illnesses, or even despite the acknowledgement of
their owners being given to others around they do not take any concern, and therefore
do not react in the correct way, causing more distress to the person with the illness
themselves.
