The concept would be to use the text in such a way that it becomes layered either physically exposing the layering below through the use of textures and opacities, or through block colours. I will be exploring ways which meet the brief in terms of creating a piece that allows for the visibility of the rainbow colours, in order to visually represent the LGBT community as well as remaining corporate enough to be able to have an event where they can include professionals to be part of in a professional capacity.
The concept uses typography itself to be able to provide an identity for the event, rather than relying on imagery, which allows for a certain amount of further experimentation when it comes to promotional materials and releases of speakers/panel members for the event itself. Although an issue with doing such is ensuring that the type can fit and be used within all of the types of platforms/formats that are required of the brief itself. I began the exploration by taking colour samples from the LGBT flag itself and transferring this into block formats of the type that had already been created in the last set of explorations.
The concept is driven behind the idea of giving a visual reference to the community in which the event belongs to whilst still allowing for the chance for the event to have its own voice, something which is an important part of the brief itself. Through the use of the type being overlaid and placed together in particular orders, the visual identity of such is kept, this can be more fludily presented through the addition of layering of the colours, something that I have previously explored within my previous ideas. I would like to include fluidity between the colours to soften the transition and give a better representation of the unity within the LGBT community.

Block Colour Type |
Overlaid Block Colours:
Figure 1 |
- Overlaid to give the feel of the colours coming through of each other without changing the transparency of the layers themselves.
- Allows for each of the colours to be seen.
- Does distract from the title of the event itself, therefore requires an extra original monochrome logo surrounded by negative space in order to give clarity to the event, as this was an important feature of the development of the type experiments themselves.
Figure 2 |
- Block colours overlaid, offers a strong representation of the colours and their meaning without taking importance over another or diluting the meaning through diluting the colours themselves.
- In order to give depth to the piece and to be able to have the colours themselves overlaid, the arrangement must be in the order of the flag, although this may appear to allow one colour to take precedence and therefore be somewhat visually more important, which takes away the value of having fluidity and equality throughout the visuals to represent the community correctly and the representation behind the use of the colours of the flag itself.
Figure 3 |
- Multiply transparency allows for all colours to show through, although creates other block colours in the transition placements, which may be argued creates a colour scheme that differs from the flag itself and therefore is not correctly representative.
- The darker patches mean that the colours are intensified that of a darker hue and the lighter ones are almost lost, again an issue that occurred in the first exploration, as it makes particular sections of the flag seem more prominent than others which are not the case nor meaning behind it and therefore should not be presented as such.
Figure 4 |
- In order to experiment more with the way that the block colours sit over each other, as I felt from a design perspective this offered most clarity for both the meaning behind the use of the colours and the concept of the branding itself, I decided to revert the background colour to black. this makes the colours that have been used pop in a more vibrant way. Therefore allows for the way in which they're layered not take as much importance, as they stand out against each other in a higher intensity than they do on the white background due to the increased contrast.
- The solid independent logo, placed in white allows for more clarity also something which is important when it comes to making the title and content of the event evident.
